Got a day off next month and thinking of a flight to Southampton and looking at the map, a quick rail trip to Shawford and a short walk to Twyford village.
Basically, it's on the edge of the national park and looks a nice place to visit.
But a couple of Q's, would anyone who knows the area recommend it, is there somewhere to eat and (more importantly) drink during the day , and any reviews of Southampton Airport would be appreciated. Thanks!!

If you enjoy walking, you might like to try the Itchen Way which, as the name suggest, runs alongside the old Itchen Navigation from Southampton to Winchester, roughly parallel with the railway.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itchen_Way

It runs right past Shawford Station so you could use it to walk through to Winchester after visiting Twyford. (Just after crossing the M3, the path goes past the old Hockley Viaduct which used to carry the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway)

You could also pick it up where it crosses the B3037, about 0.5mile from Eastleigh Station to walk to Shawford. (It runs close to Southampton Airport, but unfortunately on the wrong side).

Here link to a PDF of a leaflet outlining the route:

Thanks for the ideas everyone! Looked at the rail times and they are disappointingly hourly which if they don't leave much time inbound and outbound then there is the option of the park near the airport which has a minature railway and cafe.
However I'm liking the idea of a short walk to build up a thirst! Would probably follow the river northwards for a couple of miles and return the same route back to the pub (15>17>15) by the station; another would be (depending again on train times) Winchester and walk back.
I'l print off that leaflet nearer the time and also an OS map and hope the train leaves within 15' of arrival.
I'm certainly glad there's something to do!!
