Trivia: Stations with no lighting?

My local station has replaced the metal halide lamps in the lanterns with LED retrofits which are so dim that they may as well not be on for all the good they do!

Morecambe had a lack of lighting when I visited roughly a week or 2 ago. The last train from there isn't until reasonably late.

There are lots of rural stations like that. Both Thornford and Chetnole, on the Weymouth line, go out onto a pitch dark country road between high hedger with no pavement. There's not even anywhere to park to pick someone up. Thornford at least has a light at the top of the steps to the road bridge. Chetnole not even that.

Probably not many stations like that in Greater Manchester though, which Middlewood is. (True, it is right on the border!)

Yes, I remember in the early 1980s it was reported that stations without lights on the Heart of Wales line had their stops withdrawn after dark.

I remember catching the last train from Knighton to Shrewsbury about 20 years ago. The station was in complete darkness and we had to grope our way over the footbridge to the far platform. It was quite a relief to see the lights of the train approaching. (Probably no more than a blown fuse, I doubt it was anything planned)

Although closed in 1986, I don't think Cefn Onn ever had electric lights. It had some old posts though which may have been from previous gas or oil lamps.
