If it's not been mentioned already, Reading (General) to Reading (South) (before closure!).

Avoiding the tube, I can only think of via Basingstoke etc?

If we're talking about stations before their closure (in which case this thread will get expanded very quickly!) Croxley Green (BR) to Croxley (Met) stations would be a factor. If taking place in 1996, that would journey would be Croxley Green to Watford High Street, WHS to Queen's Park, Queen's Park to Baker Street, Baker Street to Croxley. Or, you know, a 14 minute walk according to Google...
