Trivia: Largest settlements with no evening bus services

Reading this thread, I realise just how lucky we Londoners are. Where I live gets half a dozen Night Buses, every half an hour through the night, going to Heathrow Airport, Central London and across West London. I've just had a look at places in North Wales where I used to go on holiday, such as Blaenau Ffestiniog, Dolgellau and Barmouth, and there's next to nothing after ten o'clock in the evening.

In the Scottish Borders, other than the X62 there are no buses after 7pm. Whilst a rural area it does comprise two towns, Galashiels and Hawick, with a combined population of 34,000.

The last bus on the 67 Galashiels to Kelso is at 8pm; 68 Galashiels to St Boswells is 8.30pm; X95 Galashiels to Hawick at 10pm and Hawick to Galashiels at 9.45 pm.

This falls well short of that provided pre Covid on the X95 and other routes. Hopefully evening services will be restored when there are sufficient drivers and passenger numbers increase.

The large village I grew up in in West Yorkshire, when I left it in 2001, had a half hourly Sunday and evening service along the main road and 2-hourly services on a couple of routes via hilltop villages with a last bus from town at 2325.

This briefly improved with the two hilltop services being combined into an hourly circular (so had 4 buses an hour from the nearest town evenings and Sundays).

Now it has 2 buses after 1830 at 1920 and 2120. On a Sunday it has 11 buses along the main road (with, ironically, an hourly service on the two roundabout circulars until nearly 1800), with two cases of them being less than 5 minutes apart.

The next village along on the main road has gone from having 3 buses an hour to 1 bus every 2 hours through the day.

There are some very small towns or villages quoted on this thread. Given the absence of any nearby large towns it's not at all surprising that there's little in the evenings. People living in those areas will have long realised that they really need their own car (or a good friend) if they want to travel outside, say, 7am-7pm.

Except that often they didn't need to previously.

That would be the 3 to Stourport + estates on the other side of the river (return departs Stourport High Street at 2130, but apparently dumps you at the Worcester Road island, where the depot is, rather than running into Kidder bus station). Other services wrap up much earlier than this.

Is that based on the Diamond bustimes timetable or the Diamond website timetable? If its the former, Diamond are well known for having errors on their Bus Open Data Service submissions

I guess that you're referring to the last bus from Stourport? Yes, it's the Diamond website timetable (Monday-Friday). However, bustimes seems to show the same. On Saturdays the service leaves Stourport High Street 3 minutes earlier and runs all the way.

I've never used this particular service so I can't be certain what actually happens, but most likely a friendly driver will drop you in town if so desired

I wouldn't imagine this is normally likely if its not timetabled to do that and timetabled to run short.
But its your responsibility to check the timetable in the first place.
It may well be that any regulars on that trip normally alight before the depot island as well anyway.

Ellington and Lynemouth have a combined Population of nearly 4,000 and have no evening bus service despite being close to Ashington (Ellington and Lynemouth are a 20 minutes walk from each other so I put them both together)
