I wonder if Ely might rival Cambridge for Cambs?

Tyne and Wear is still the ceremonial county for Newcastle, isn’t it, there’s still a Lord Lieutenant.

I don’t think any station in Northumberland provides much interchange. Presumably Morpeth by default.

Newcastle became a County Corporate (Effectively leaving Northumberland and becoming a county of itself) in 1400 and Berwick did the same in 1836, Berwick however is now in Northumberland again while Newcastle became part of Tyne and Wear, so I would nominate Berwick with possibly some interchange between LNER/TPE. Northumberland really doesn't have a great deal of scope at the minute for interchange but once the Northumberland Line opens then Northumberland Park might be a contender as that is North Tyneside and prior to 1974 was Northumberland and now North Tyneside Borough of Tyne and Wear.

4 TOCs at Ely vs 3 at Cambridge, and the EMR Liverpool-Norwich services add a lot more significant destinations that you don't get directly from Cambridge. Conversely Ely only has about 20% of the total passengers that Cambridge gets, and fewer trains in total per hour. So it depends what criteria you want to prioritise.

Peterborough is worth mentioning too when considering ceremonial Cambridgeshire.
