Trivia: False destinations on trains

Although I've never been round the loop and only see the trains departing from St Albans, the Sutton loop trains are billed as 'terminating' at Sutton but only dwell for 2-3 minutes, so once they get past Streatham Junction, passengers on journeys within the loop from one side of Sutton to the other would need to be aware of stations called at beyond the displayed terminus.

In that case, I know the headcodes change at Sutton; do drivers often change there?

Adding to the list of false destinations on SWR (SR SW Division in my day). Up stoppers from Bournemouth to Waterloo (93) were shown on platform departure boards as being for Surbiton, until the train reached Basingstoke. I don't recall the down services as being advertised for Pokesdown

The Bradford Interchange to Leeds via Dewsbury trains are advertised as Cottingley on both departure screens and the front of the train. Not sure what they show when departing Leeds though. I would guess Brighouse maybe.

But headcodes are not visible to passengers* so they need some indication for a journey that passes through Sutton on a train that doesn't change direction.
* Yes, I know that we can easily find them, but with headcode displays no longer available on the head of the train, most are oblivious to them

So if a train displays a different destination to passengers, do station announcements play the full real destination and mention all the timetabled calling points?

If anything, probably the other way around, and depends on the train. For example at Waterloo, I've seen a 701 say it was going to Waterloo while it was at Waterloo (rounder service) while the boards and announcements said it was going to Strawberry Hill.
By comparison, when I went on a rounder operated by a 450, the train actually got the looping calling points right.

Other company's rounder services, such as on Southeastern, communicate the false destinations quite well.

Did the Southport-Blackburn services via Rochdale and Burnley ever show as actually going to Blackburn or did they use false destinations? - it's certainly not the direct route between the two towns and on one of the ex-Merseyside 142s it wasn't a pleasant ride either!

Not sure about Southport-Blackburn but Kirkby/Headbolt Lane - Blackburn has always shown the true destination the whole time.
Not sure if false destinations have ever been used in Manchester.

Station announcements would say the false destination but there is exceptions such as when engineering work occur that the real destination does show up such as Woking via Hounslow when the main line is shut. Trains depend on what train type it is like the 450 when the PIS changes en route on rounders but they do show the real destination (Aldershot) on the Frimley services.

Another SWR example are the weekday London Waterloo to Aldershot via Staines services which are advertised as going to Frimley, as Alton services offer a quicker alternative from Waterloo to Ash Vale and Aldershot down the mainline.

The Waterloo to Portsmouth via Eastleigh services used to be advertised as Cosham, however I believe these are advertised as going the full journey at Waterloo now since the drop in frequency on the Portsmouth via Guildford ‘Direct’ route since Covid. Similarly, I seem to recall the pre-Covid Waterloo to Poole stopping service was advertised in the up direction as Farnborough towards the start of its journey as it used to get overtaken once or twice by faster services, but I can’t remember if the down service was advertised as Brockenhurst or something.

Other SWR false destinations include, for different reasons, the Kingston loop services, which understandably aren’t advertised at London Waterloo as going to London Waterloo. From memory they are advertised as Strawberry Hill via Kingston or Teddington via Richmond. A similar situation exists with the weekday peak time Hounslow rounder services. One assumes similar circular services operated by Scotrail (Glasgow Central to Glasgow Central via Cathcart) and Southeastern (Cannon Street to Cannon Street via Woolwich & Sidcup) also do this.
In addition, Weybridge via Hounslow is sometimes advertised as terminating at Addlestone

Reading did the same to discourage people using the Elizabeth Line through to Paddington before the tunnels to Abbey Wood opened in 2022.
Yes, was the same with the stoppers. Actually still does it for the few trains that terminate in the high level platforms.
