The 18 does NOT have a 10 minute layover in town, it’s max 1 min, maybe more if running early. It’s timed for 12 mins from Central station to Bargate and then 14 mins to Bitterne shops.

If you get off and walk then you might get one bus ahead but you’ll likely end up on the bus you just got off.
Every time I have used this route it has certainly felt like a longer than necessary layover with a driver break at Bargate. Maybe the bus is just always early.

In Hampshire, Stagecoach bus no 10 does a long one way loop at the Southern end of the route in Church Crookham.

It would be quicker to get off outside The Wyvern pub and walk the approximately 850 metres to The Verne, rather than wait for the bus to do the loop via Quetta Park.

In Birmingham, it might just about be quicker to get off a bus in Great Charles Street and walk to Colmore Row (400 metres) than wait for the bus to do the one way loop via Snow Hill Station and Snow Hill Queensway, particularly if the bus gets stuck in traffic like it did for me on Saturday. <(

Route 11 in Telford has a section that's around 2 mins or so quicker if you walk it, which could be handy if you just miss a bus.
(Image attached shows a map of the route)
