I was looking at a SELNEC route map from the early 1970s for that list. This showed no service 43, although Oxford Road did have a 46 back then (Royal Exchange - Palatine Rd - Northenden - Styal).

By the 1977 GMT route map, the 46 had disappeared, but the 43 had appeared.
Thanks. Actually, I had a moment's panic there, because I couldn't recall where the 46 went and thought perhaps it was still unused in the mid 1980s, which would have blown a big hole in my sequence! o_O

Just checked the Bus Guide collection - the 46 was still extant, it was the hourly diversion of the 42 which ran to Millgate Lane at East Didsbury rather than Parrs Wood. I excuse myself on the grounds that the 42, 45 and 46 were Birchfields Road routes that I wasn't involved in scheduling or occasionally conducting.

The 46 reappeared after deregulation and still went down the Wilmslow Road but was a circular with the 47 going the opposite way, interestingly just after de-reg their was a 46, 47, 48, 49 all circulars using Wilmslow Road (so you would have had 40 to 49 using Wilmslow Road) in the same period this was short lived with 48 being withdrawn in 1988, the 46, & 47 ended up being withdrawn in 2011.

You can get some of the route history & timetables from this great website
