Transport Interchanges

Hey!
Just thinking about the new Interchange due to be built in Hartlepool and wondered what other projects were going on throughout the Rail Industry.

Hartlepool Interchange will have Buses, Coaches, Taxis & Trains available, and it is probable that they will re-open the second platform (talks are going on today) - This will definately stop the "Waiting for a platform" excuse aha.

So what NEW interchanges or updates to do with Interchanges are currently being built around the network? Feel free to discuss.

Around Stratford in preparation for the Olympics (the new DLR link and the opening of Stratford international for the Eurostar and Southeastern's javelin service).

Hull has recently become an 'Interchange' although it's not decribed as such in any rail timetables. There used to be a separate bus station next to the station, which was an absolute dump (see http://www.flickr.com/photos/msjharper/414929340/). This was subsequently closed and demolished, and work commenced in the adjacent railway station to convert it into an interchange. There were several aspects to this work. Firstly, bus bays were 'cut out' of the north front of the station, and a new glass frontage with automatic doors was erected to allow bus passengers to wait within the trainshed, sheltered from the elements (http://www.flickr.com/photos/-steves-/1374966008/). The trainshed roof was reglazed, making the place much lighter and more pleasant (http://www.flickr.com/photos/18204471@N08/2873933792/). Meanwhile, a new bus/rail travel centre was constructed on the north front, and the old ticket office was converted to a waiting room and new toilets. New shops and cafes have opened (Ritazza, Pretzel shop, Greggs, 'The Point' convenience shop etc.), a new information system has been installed for buses and trains as well as help points. There are also coach bays and a new taxi rank. Overall, it's been a big project that has really improved public transport in the city. as i mentioned in an older thread, hartford junction would be an ideal place for an interchange, demolish hartford and acton bridge, the station would link up cheshire by rail better, linking the WCML and the MCL and avoiding the need to change at greenbank and walking, or changing at chester or manchester.

middlewich branch could be a cheaper option, im not sure tbh.

Castleford is the local one I can think of.

Probably not the most important in terms of passenger numbers and routes, but a decent upgrade to the facility nonetheless.

Surely Warrington Central and Warrington BQ can be one station? The lines cross each other!

Leeds is a kinda interchange... It has many bus stops outside the station, and then a few more across two roads

The obvious one in Glasgow is Partick Interchange, linking local trains, buses and the subway. Bus links to places such as Glasgow Airport are invaluable at this moment in time. A quick google also reveals Markinch Interchange, which provides a better service for Glenrothes. Like "whoshotjimmi"'s offering, this one is more of local benefit than a nationally important scheme like Partick and Stratford.

Glasgow is, however, quite bad on the whole for joining up journeys, despite SPTs best efforts. The subway doesn't link the two main rail stations (there's a free bus that does, but it's lightly used), Buchanan Bus Station is again a separate entity and the ticket system which can be used to link journeys (Zonecard) is unnecessarily complex, not very flexible and not available on every operator.

That said, most new projects in Scotland are being built with the view to interchange with buses. The new Airdrie-Bathgate line will have bus stops and turning circles to serve local communities, for example. Also, Gartcosh was opened with a bus turning circle, but as far as I know it's not currently in use.

My brother has a flat in Partick, all you do is get off at Central Station, walk to St Enoch or Buchanan Street and you're practically there! It's a very nice station too.

Just an update...
The following news has been released from the latest HVDA meeting in Seaton Carew (Who are the voluntary organisation working with Northern to develop both Hartlepool & Seaton stations):
"Work on the latter had started; that to the underpass would be next. The whole project should be completed in a year. Home Office guidance recommended having structures with reduced glass in them (as a result of a terrorist threat).

HVDA reported on the 'shape' of the interchange - three buses could be accommodated at any one time; there would be a taxi rank and coach park, with cycle-way and pedestrial facility improvements. A Passenger bridge may be installed and there will be an 80 space Pay and Display or business parking facility with, possibly, a coffee shop/other retail unit(s).

The Network Rail station improvements would start in November and finish by May next year. The signal works had started, though the concept of having a glass structure on Platform 2 to accommodate passengers had now been abolished. However, a public address system, CCTV and information screens would be installed on Platform two from November. Platform 3 would be resurfaced and the canopy refurbished.

Good Example - it's now very easy to switch modes of transportation.

Meadowhall is a good example of an interchange working.

Rail, Tram, Park & Ride and Bus.


The ease of interchange at Sheffield Midland of course is likely to be blighted by barriers on the footbridge.


Funding has been passed for new transport interchange at Mansfield, connecting Robin Hood Line with a new bus station, serving both local and National Express coach services.



I think in London, one of the best interchange stations will become the entire Kings Cross/St Pancras complex.

Buses, Circle, H&C, Met, Vic, Pic, Northern, FCC (TL), FCC (GN), E*, Southeastern, EMT, NXEC, GC, HT.
