The VRR transport network has an EinzelTicket costing €15.70, price level E, valid for 5 hours in one direction

Does it officially allow break of journey within those 5 hours or are you obliged to use the next available connection at each changing point?

I don't know of any restriction over and above the "no round trip or return journeys" which would be standard conditions for such tickets in Europe. So as long as you move in the same direction in a logical straight line you can presumably valid as long as you get off at your final destination on or before 4h59 has elapsed!

The 5 hours validity sounds like a way of excluding its use as a commuter ticket at both ends of one day.

The same (unlimited BoJ before your time is up) would apply to the shorter-distance, shorter-time tickets too. By contrast "Short-hop" tickets (KurzTicket or similar, depends on the Verbund area) often don't even allow a change of vehicle.

the ability to change vehicles on kurzstrecke tickets depends on local transport association, i.e. fine in Munich, no good in Berlin
