I dont agree. I think even his biggest critic would agree that BJ would not have cancelled HS2.

Johnson was PM when the IRP was published, which killed off the idea of any NPR east of Marsden. Allegedly his acolytes and Sunak's were still fighting over the content the evening before publication.

Is there any scope to increase linespeed between Stalybridge and Huddersfield (or also between Leeds and Church Fenton)?

Quite expensive to implement though.
Perhaps reprofiling some of the sharpest curves would help e.g. the northern end of Standedge tunnel to Marsden station.
