Moving to near Stratford-Upon-Avon in the next few weeks, could anybody tell me where the best locations for spotting either freight or passenger are in this area please?

Hatton is a decent place - been there just today in fact. I was thinking more south of Stratford but I dont think there is much about

At Leamington Spa you will also see freight routed via Kenilworth, plus everything you would have seen at Hatton. From memory I think Southampton-Crewe Basford Hall container trains go that way?

Thanks, I have heard a lot about Leamington Spa, sounds like a good place to start.

Hi @Skidderwolf ,

I live in S-u-A.


Leamington Spa: Quite a bit of freight as well as the usual Chiltern, CrossCountry and WMT trains. Doesn't have a footbridge in case you want to get a higher view.
Hatton: Like Leamington Spa (but a little less freight) and only occasional CrossCountry trains and a few WMT trains. Chiltern is the same level. Has the advantage of a footbridge as well as a road bridge.

In the more immediate area, you're only likely to see the 2 tph WMT (between Wilmcote and S-u-A) and the 1 x 2 hourly Chiltern trains. During summer, there's a quite regular excursion service (either Diesels or Steam). The best place I've found for the steam ones in on the footbridge at Wilmcote (with the train coming from S-u-A struggling up the incline). You will be highly unlikely to see any freight trains on the 2 "branches" into S-u-A (other than some driver training engines and the usual vegetation and/or sanding trains).

If you want a bit of variety, for the nearest electrics try Coventry**, or for GWR Class 8xx, there is Evesham, hourly daytime only bus ride from S-U-A if you have no car.

(** - There is also Birmingham New Street, but it is a bit too large to identify everything that passes through, and it is a grim place to stay for a long time. Water Orton gets a lot of freight, but beware it lacks basic facilities such as toilets.)
