Town Service (a nostalgic thread about relatively short bus services)

There are quite a few town services in Sussex, operated by the likes of Renown, Compass and Cuckmere Community Bus. Here are a couple of pics of the two Seaford Town Services from 2011; oddly, although both are so named in the timetable, the route 120 is showing "Circular" on the display while the 119 has "Town Service"! Other smallish towns with town services include Uckfield (245), Lewes (127 and 128), Burgess Hill (34 and 35: severely cut back from next week due to poor patronage), and I think even some smaller places like Heathfield and Hailsham.

Four specifically "Town" services come to mind in Denbighshire:-

1]Service 38 - Prestatyn Town Service [operated by Voel with one vehicle], which consists of 8 circuits from 0920-1350, Mons-Sats.

2]Services 83/83A & 84/84A - Rhyl Town Service[operated by Arriva with one vehicle], from 0755-1735 Mons-Sats & 0930-1930 Suns. These are presumably commercial services, for there are four later services, Mons-Sats covering the same routes, at 1800,1830,1900 & 2140 numbered 183/184 - presumably tendered by DCC.

3]Service 47 - Rhyl Town Service [operated by M&H Coaches to a different route from [2]], consisting of 4 journeys 1030-1330.

4]Service 73 - Ruthin Town Service [operated by GHA Coaches] with 3 journeys[the 3rd being demand responsive] from 1008-1245.

I'm sure these four also include the words "Town Service" in the destination box.

In answer to one of the OP's questions, I wonder if Ruthin, with a population of 5,218 in 2001, is one of the smallest towns to enjoy such a facility?

Portree, pop. 2,491 according to Wikipedia, has a town service, the 58. I imagine it's council funded though.

Yes - of course - you're right!

I remember seeing it load last summer when I was awaiting the 57C service Portree-Uig-Staffin-Portree.

The 57C, by the way, is a lovely way to see the scenic coastline, only marred by Stagecoach using a school bus that day - 3-aside seating and hardly any legroom!

By the way have you noticed on the TB website that, since the Sixes rebranding the "Se7ens" are now called the "Sevens", as if it makes any difference.
