Todmorden is one of several places that have been "shunted" backwards & forwards between different counties over the centuries. Many people still dislike the "artificial so-called counties" invented in 1972/74 by Ted Heath and the London-dominated civil service without regard to local opinion & tradition, and use the traditional county names for the places where they live.
