Rolling back the Beeching Axe??

Britain's train operating companies have called for railway lines closed as part of the infamous Beeching cuts to be reopened to link expanding towns to the rail network.

The Association of Train Operating Companies says there is a strong business case for opening 14 lines in England and up to 40 new stations in order to provide rail services to a million people in towns of 15,000 people or above who currently lack rail access.

What, no mention of the Woodehead route Manchester to Sheffield? Another one I'd love to see opened would be the lovely ex-Midalnd main line through the Peak District, east of Buxton.

They only closed that (in 1968) because of the expense of maintaining Dove Holes tunnel. Ironically, that tunnel was never closed as it's on the section still used for stone trains out of Tunstead!

That route is mentioned in the ATOC document in the Appendix under possible links between rail lines. Appendix 3: http://www.atoc.org/general/ConnectingCommunitiesReport_S10.pdf

It also mentions Matlock to Buxton - is that the section you're talking of?

I'm bringing this up again, I know, but one needs only to look at Alloa and Larkhall to see the benefits that a Beeching reversal can bring to a local community, not to mention the financial benefit as well.
