There are plenty of stations where it's possible to avoid barriers or where there is inadequate staffing at one or more entrances so the barriers can be misused. I'm not going to say how for certain reasons but when at Nottingham a few weeks ago I exited the station by a signposted exit (having never been there before I'd assumed it was the main exit) and was surprised when I returned an hour later (to a different entrance) to be confronted by a gateline manned by 6 members of EMT staff!

When I was in Nottingham for the first time last week I left the station by a non-barriered, sign posted exit. However there were 2 members of EMT staff there checking tickets. It was around 12:30pm when I went through.

Guess they must have had extra staff then. Though I'm not sure why they needed 6 staff working the automatic gates...

Interesting, I thought tram passengers were allowed to exit through the footbridge to the car park...

Just a bit of an update, I planned to visit 10 stations around Greater Manchester to try to obtain platform tickets; unfortunately the weather is absolutely dreadful so I gave up after 5. Of the 5, I obtained a platform ticket from Manchester Victoria, Manchester Oxford Road (hock, Manchester Piccadilly and New Mills Central. I tried at Stockport but apparantly they don't sell them there which is odd. I was very surprised at Oxford Road, they just said to advise the gateline staff where I'd be and let them know when I leave, you really can't say fairer than that can you?

I had great fun trying to explain the purpose of a platform ticket to one of the G4S at Piccadilly, he was there discussing it with the others and after a few minutes he let me through and said "you could have just asked to go onto the platform, it's free"

I'll have to do Crewe, Wilmslow, Guide Bridge, Stalybridge and Glossop another day.
