Today I am taking a trip on the flying Scotsman. Left Waverley on time from both platforms 7 and 11 so that the press could see 91101 in its new purple flying Scotsman livery. The train had a cyclist and piper playing Scotland the brave upon departure.

Still to early to sample the catering as no orders have been taken for breakfast yet. Let's hope that network rail can keep it on time and XC stopping trains out of it's way.

The positive that the earlier arrival has saved me the sleeper this time. Got a nice little pack including a certificate that I was on the train.

My moans, couldn't get a seat in a normal coach so stuck in coach K. The train is fully reserved but loadings about 1/4 at Edinburgh. East coast I feel have the ratio wrong in first class, 1/3 of seats in the quite coach isn't good when people want to work and use phones. At the very least the booking system needs not quite coach as an option not just quite coach and no preference.

Just passed Berwick.

First part of the new offering, the pasty and juice. Very nice. The orders are taken for breakfast with a little coloured label on the seat. It will be interesting to see what happens as the train hits Newcastle as serving a full mk4 set will be a challenge.

That is the train into Newcastle, taking 1h18 from Edinburgh, a personal fastest journey time for me.

Very busy at Newcastle, but hard to tell if the train is really fully booked, very high loadings and no shows can be expected but about 85% full in first.

Breakfast for the Edinburgh mob complete, about the same size as the previous offering at seat, although some will miss the beans and black pudding. I noticed even a Newcastle people are trying to avoid the quite coach.

Left Newcastle on time, next stop London. Another minor detail the mugs are all new so no need for lighting reflexes when trains pass.

Passed through York on platform 5, don't know if that is going to be the booked route. With the loadings on the train today a stop at York would have resulted in overcrowding, but I have the feeling that today is not a typically loaded train!

Another first for the failed unit, passing through Doncaster without getting signal checked for another a Leeds to London service to cross the line ahead (it was waiting on the Leeds branch)! You see network rail it is possible to make the Leeds stoppers wait so why do you always stop most other Edinburgh - London services not due to stop at Doncaster wait outside the station!

Passed through at 0809, so although 0940 arrival into Kings Cross is still very much on the cards it will need some good signalling.

It will be interesting to see how the new timetable works in terms of timekeeping, I know more padding has being added, but in my experience regulation is the curse of the ECML timetable. I particular in my experience late running XC trains getting let out ahead of the East Coast service at York going north then the East Coast service getting signal checked at Darlington and Durham (even when the East Coast doesn't stop at Durham) and as mentioned Doncaster southbound. No new timetable can stop the network rail all class ones are equal. I think not needing to pass through Haymarket will help timekeeping a lot (although as many will point out the 1030, 1130 and 1230 still do) Most delays on ECML are signal / wire problems anyway.

It is claimed that the flying Scotsman liveried stock will be used on this service where possible, be interesting to see how they diagram that, I guess it will need a trip to Leeds, either that or it will spend most of the day spare at bounds green to return North on either the 1530, 1630, 1830 or 1900.

Encountered the first "problem" in the lose sense we have caught up with the 0700 ex Hull service at Newark which is stopping at Grantham as well so getting stopped as a result, Grantham is 1 hour away so the 0940 arrival may still be achievable, but unlikely. The service from Hull is about 5 minutes late. I guess this is going to be a regular problem for this service. The couldn't even get it out the way at Newark as an EMT service was stood in platform 3 so the only place we can pass is Peterborough unless it is placed on the slow lines. I bet they are disappointed, but it is their own train, it also shows with virtaully no slack that little things will lose its prize timing!

Not short of staff on hear, Elaine Holt herself along with many other directors. I wonder how well loaded the Lincoln service was today.

A few facts for you
If on time, the train will average a speed of 98mph from start to stop
Reaching Berwick after 37 minutes, it averaged 104mph despite the major speed check at Grantshouse

Our only problem so far is catching up with the 0700 hull - kings cross service a Newark. It was only 5 minutes late but as Newark had a EMT service in 3 it could not be looped, we needed to wait while it stopped a Grantham as well before it was put in a loop between Grantham and the tunnel. Just passed Peterborough so 43 minutes to get to London. Possible if Welwyn is kind to us. Shows how sensitive this service will be to even minor problems.

I wonder if anyone from Newcastle will use the 0630 now that this arrives at London at the same time?

Hope we get put on platform 8 so we don't get delayed by the pointless barriers. I can assure you that everyone should have their ticket checked between Newcastle and London! Lots of staff on today, including Ms Holt and many directors serving tea and coffee.

Oaft, now 5 late!

Due KGX 0941!

The computer has now decided that it actually passed Huntingdon 4 late, not 5 as I reported. Is someone fiddling this?

Not bad really, but by ECML standards this is a very good run. Just passed through St Neots, sadly I think this train will be very rarely bang on time. (ie 940 and not the railway viewpoint that on-time is 0949)

I don't know to be honest what they could have done to ensure for the press that this was a perfectly on-time arrival without looping the Hull service before Newark (maybe Retford) but that can't be done everyday.

I guess still a chance that we could make KX by 0940 if the wind is behind us. <D

BTW probably closer to Sandy by the time this hits the site. I will let you know the time we pass Stevenage according to my watch, which of course may not be 100% accurate itself.

passed Stevenage @ 0922

The Catering Crew certainly had their work cut out today, I wonder how they will find a dinner service on the 1700, which on my past 2 journey is totally full in first class.

Still 4 late, but was due in KGX 1 late. Then 4 late but now, it's either made up 30 seconds and NR has got it a clear run - or NR has been holding things for it

Well that is the journey nearly over, will post what time we really arrived at Kings Cross but I would estimate at the moment at about 0942 as we are passing New Southgate at 0934. Not bad a journey, better than the sleeper I will let you know tonight when I see know knackered I am (or not) but certainly feel much better now than I would on the sleeper, the time keeping is a concern as I don't think it will be on time very often, but will keep an eye out, I am sure network rail were told to smooth the path today.

I good improvement to the timetable as the 0550 was perfect either. It is a pity that as debated before the peak Northbound service is now worse than it was last week, the 1800 in particular if you want to use it for connections. Hopefully the northbound will be refined shortly.

0936.48 pass Finsbury Park, very close

Very slow run between Finsbury & KX, for interest where did it lose the time, was it following the Hull Executive between Newark and Grantham.

Arrived at Kx at 0942 according to station clock, not bad but not sure how much "help" the service had. The 0630 ex Newcastle was held outside the station as we passed it for example.

Arrived on platform 1 greated by the press and goodies including a pipe band.

Even better the barriers were all open :)

Apologies for some of the duplicate info, the wifi was playing up on the train. Some things I thought hadn't posted really had. I will tidy up when back in front of a real pc.

Lost time at Grantham, sticking around 3/4 minutes late until Finsbury Park. Between there and Kings Cross the delay was just 1 minute, but 2 late into the Cross

Yep, agreed. Interesting read. Now for someone to do a similar thing in a few weeks time when the service is not on the media radar
I agree, a very good informative read. I too would like to see how the service performs in daily life. It always annoys me that when an MD, press or dignitaries are on board that the train is specially picked and has extra depot attention, and then usually driver and guards inspectors, a travelling fitter with special line to control and other extra staff.

Surely the press, MD, and dignitaries would like to experience the normal operating service.

Its all about the media isn't it? It gives the impression to the travelling public that it will always be like this, when it clearly won't.

Having said that, from a business point a view, if it had arrived officially 'late', it wouldn't do much for the PR, so they have to put extra effort in. Misselling....??

I agree even 10 late on the first day would be the perfect headline for the anti-rail press. I may be back on it again in a few weeks time, but if it gets a reputation for late running then it will damage the service for Scottish travellers, the sleeper will always make the early meeting the red eye doesn't.

I see Eliane holt is using the spin about there isn't demand for a fast evening service and how it will disrupt evening stopping patterns. Mostly true but the addition of Dunbar into the 1800 is a big problem to people heading north of Edinburgh. I know the market for London - Stirling is small but is Dunbar so big that having the 1830 stop there would have lost it? At least if the 1830 stopped there then the 1800 could have stuck to it's old path.

I will see how the 1700 northbound does tomorrow. I know it has ran as a Hst for a while now but considering that it and the 1800 are both the busiest peak service for Newcastle I don't think the will have enough seats on 1st. The 1700 often was reservations only for 1st. Now the 1730 is much slower than before Newcastle folk may wait for the quicker 1800.

However let's not take it away, this is a good day for east coast. Hopefully the refinements will take place, but it will be interesting to see the impact of 5 late ex-Newcastle.

Media around, all the 'boys' on board, a clear run where possible...and still 2 late. Doesn't bode well for the future. Gone by xmas.

I should add, this would be a shame. In my perfect world there would be a 4 hour service every hour from 5 'till 8. Both ways, Newcastle only. I'd have a slower 'stopping' service that connected at Newcastle with the fasts. I would also have non-stop Kings Cross > Leeds service (1h59m) continuing to York, Darlington, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Ideally the slow down service arrives Newcatle just before the down fast allowing customers to swap if they want the 'smalls' between Newcastle and Edinburgh. Similar thing in the up (rather like the service that connects with the FS at Newcastle).

So, 3 tph to Edinburgh (one via Leeds, one very fast, one slow)
3 tph to Leeds (one fast (cont. Glasgow), one slow, one semi fast cont. to (alternate all day, Skipton/Harrogate - sorry Bradford, you get the GC's)

Also, 1 tph Hull/Sunderland/Bradford (I'd force the companies to run together from Kings Cross to Doncaster)

Also, put the 2tph fasts to cambridge on the Hertford Loop (grade seperating them from the entire East Coast services one the flyover is built)

For this to work we need, I flyover Hitchin (coming soon), Electrify Leeds>York (hardly far), upgrade the power and reinstate the passing loops at Gordon Hill on the Loop, the will to allow the 180's to split/join at Doncaster (do it in the yard if platform space is an issue). And make all other trains timetable around them.

Really interesting report, the kind of "ground level" information that makes a forum like this so fascinating

Thanks for the report "Failed Unit". Although it may have been two minutes late, it's good to see the service so well used. Although it has been commented that it's not necessarily going to be that busy on a regular basis, I think it bodes well for this particular stopping pattern, even if the journey time is extended in the future.

Thanks everyone,
Another failed unit report coming along from the 1500 northbound :) Which is full because of airline passengers. I wonder how the at seat offering will go :)

I suspect the stock is on the 1830 or 1900 going north, just passed it near grantham heading south

Pity 4472 was unavailable to be there too. Would've been nice if she were present at Waverley for the relaunch.

The fact that you want go should be reason enough if you really, really want to. ;)
