Being a train guard does wonders for killing off your reserve. My method is simple. If it's cold, on turnaround when I'm clearing any big bits of litter, I bang all of the windows shut. If it's hot, or I'm working to a certain eastern seaside resort favoured by people who don't shower or clean their teeth very often (not everyone by any means but there's often at least one and it doesn't take many) then I whack them all wide open at the same time.

I then allow the dominant natural balance in the carriage to take over and let the passengers fend for themselves. If they make the wrong choice in my opinion then I can influence them by adjusting the heating... <D
