Yesterday I was in Dublin to travel on the Dublin Bay Hopper. This is a new venture between Iarnrod Eireann & Railtours Ireland and claims to be world’s first private hop-on hop-off tour train. It offers spectacular views of the Dublin coastline with full commentary throughout. The tour operates on Saturdays only and offers four departures each way.

Tickets are only €19 and include unlimited DART travel for 2 days (Saturday & Sunday).

It's a stunning section of railway between Dublin and Greystones, shame the specials only reach Bray (I'll assume Greystones is omitted because of the single line section and capacity thereof). Also kind of surprised it doesn't include a run up to Howth, that's quite touristy from what I recall of my visit. Still, I guess the very generous ticketing offer and frequent service anyway covers it.

At the moment it is only one train. To offer any sort of service it was either northside or southside. If it is successful then I suspect a second train may be done and a northside service done as well.

That would need a decent turnout to cover costs, I hope they can make a success of it.

I wonder how they keep regular punters from boarding this? Must go out one Saturday and have a look.

Loadings have been poor to date, however the official launch has not yet occurred (coming soon). I hope it is a success as well and it is a daring venture.

Railtours Ireland Staff man one coach each and ask any boarders are they for the Dublin Bay Hopper train. It was far easier than I thought. Usually helped by the train going to the end of the platform.
