You appear to have missed the point about self-advertising by an organisation to whom advertising was said to be anathema that I sought to make.

And you appear to have missed the point that promotion of ones self is not the same as commercial advertising that I sought to make.

There are currently TV adverts promoting all of the BBC, ITV, C4 and C5 which are shown on all of those networks.

I think the BBC is (unintentionally) biased, but everyone, of all sides, seems to think it is so it must be doing roughly ok.
Subscription would be bad - BBC News and a basic TV/radio service should be paid for in a ‘compulsory’ way - any alternative to the licence fee needs to be at least as protected from government whims and blackmail.
It is a good thing for everyone if everyone has access to unbiased News, documentaries and culture.
And the scandalous decision to make only licence payers pay for World Service (clearly a plus for the whole nation) must be reversed.
However the BBC does need cutting back to basics. It has too many channels and too big an Internet presence (internet should really only be news and public service, leaving ’magazine’ stuff to commercial business)
Presenter pay should also be slashed to ’competent and good’ not ‘star’ levels. If they can make more elsewhere then good luck to them - as part of being a public service the BBC can be a finishing school opportunity for new talent.
Something that should be added is a BBC local news agency, a local, subsidised PA/Reuters that local papers and radio can use.
