This I noticed too when I had the pleasure of entertaining my 3-year old for 90 minutes during the summer LNWR cancellation lottery.

We spent time exploring the whole station, watching trains on each platform and trying every seat in the waiting rooms.

A footbridge or underpass further down would help even the flow of people, but that autotransformer definitely justifies its wide berth.

It would also save people having to walk along the HL platforms to access the Up TV. I imagine it would have to be equipped with lifts, even though the existing layout has 3 of a possible 4.
(Gone are the days when Tamworth LL was a wayside halt...)

Re the London platform waiting facilities, the satellite view shows that there is enough room between the stairs and the point where the autotransformer intrudes to make a more generous waiting area with a larger shelter and more seats.

If they genuinely explored the entire station to the full length of each end of every platform and back, and the three year old was not being carried, my calculations say this would take a perhaps surprising 45 minutes including the steps. Allowing for toilet, food and resting tiny legs breaks, 90 minutes sounds about right.

Not sure if mentioned the south WCML platform used to have a waiting shelter made of the same dull bricks like the one on the high level but smaller. It got torn down about 1988ish and replaced with the deluxe bus shelter of the type which morphed across other provincial stations

Not actually a bad idea considering how much money must be being lost with the pay only when challenged customers, especially as ticket checks on LNR can be described as limited (you might get the guard doing a patrol on departure from Crewe heading south before 'hiding' in the middle cab for the remainder of the journey, even disabling the gangway doors soon after Atherstone). Similar to XC.

i have been at Tamworth 2 days running this week. Awful. It needs rebuilding and perhaps moving to Saint-Tropez. Certainly the former. I would settle for something less 1980's eastern block!

The only improvement I saw years ago was a local owned newsagent opened up and also sold coffee, tea and soup. Ideal to keep warm for when the Coventry power trailer 108 or 114 to Stafford was often running late as it could not keep to a power twin schedule!

Anecdotally, it's the station with the least ticketless or incorrect ticketing in both directions from my experience. Vast majority holding tickets requiring connections.
