Please can someone read this response to a letter by GWR for fare shorting and offer advice as to what I need to change? Thank you!

Dear Prosecutions Department,

I was stopped at London Waterloo on 14th September for purchasing a ticket from Clapham Junction to Waterloo when I got on at a stop before that. I am extremely sorry for doing this and I understand that this is not acceptable behaviour and I have not done this since the incident and I definitely will not repeat this in the future.

I would appreciate it if you would consider an out of court settlement and of course I will pay any admin fees incurred as well.
I hope you accept my sincere apology and realise the inconvenience this has caused to SWR.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

Could you show us the paperwork that you've received from GWR please? It will help the pros here to advise you.

Also, is it ok to send an email or would you advise a letter?

It is a very brief letter and does not seem to me to convey you appreciate your wrong doing and that you are contrite.

You have said " and I...." three times in the same sentence.

The last sentence does not make sense.

It is not about the inconvenience to SWR but that you have failed to pay the correct fare which is unfair both to the company and to the many millions who do pay the correct fare.

I cant see that it gives you an email option to send your reply. Hence it should go by post (and use a signed for service so you have proof of delivery).

Thank you for your response.
How is this…

Dear Ms Gray,

I am writing in response to your letter regarding my rail travel incident on the 14of of July 2025.

I would like to sincerely apologise for travelling without a valid ticket on this occasion.
I made a very poor decision at the time - a choice I now fully regret and take full responsibility for my actions. I completely understand the gravity of my actions and their implications.

Since then, I’ve taken full responsibility and reflected seriously on my behaviour. This has been a difficult but important lesson, and I am committed to ensuring it never happens again.

I would be very grateful for the opportunity to resolve this matter out of court. I am willing to pay all outstanding fares along with any reasonable administrative costs incurred, and I am prepared to do so promptly. I sincerely hope that, given my full cooperation and genuine remorse, this matter can be brought to a close without further action.

Yours faithfully,

Have you been short faring on other occasions too? They may uncover this through an audit of your purchase history.
