If somebody purchased a Swindon to Cardiff return (within a month), would it be also valid via Bath?

I've just put it through National Rail Enquiries and it validates the journey. I don't expect any train staff would have an issue either as it isn't overly circuitous.

Maps LW & SB at https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/travel-information/routeing-guide/ show all permitted routes in addition to the shortest route and any route within 3 miles of the shortest route, and both maps show Bath to be along a valid route. So, “yes” is the answer to the question above.

This map shows that Swindon-Bath-Bristol-Cheltenham-Newport-Cardiff is a valid route!

There is of course a through train that way at 06.20 on weekdays - reverses at both Temple Meads and Parkway.

Although the existence of a direct train doesn't necessarily mean that the route it follows is generally a permitted route. You can use the through train from your origin to your destination, of course, but changing or breaking your journey intermediately is another matter.
