I was on a 158 recently when all of a sudden most of the florescent lights went out, leaving about for sets of double tubes illuminated along the carriage.
The effect was that the carriage was clearly illuminated enough to see everyone and everything, however the whole ambience was vastly more pleasant and relaxing and it was a lot easier to see out of the window. Needless to say, within about ten minutes the full hideous lighting was restored and the ambience destroyed.
Is this a proper setting on all 158s and was it used in service at any time ? I vaguely recall the Transpennine 158's having a much gentler ambience, but this might have been due in part to decor rather than the lighting itself.
