My regular journey is Rotherhithe to Egham, which costs £13.85 for an anytime day return with a 16-25 railcard - however, I've noticed that if I purchase a ticket from Rotherhithe to Longcross, two stations further down the line (but outside the Project Oval area), then the fare is only £11.25* for an anytime day return.

If I buy a ticket to Longcross and stop short at Egham, then try to re-enter at Egham for the return journey, will the ticket be viewed as valid and will I be able to save £2.60 a day - or will the ticket barriers and station staff refuse due to the fact I'm saving money?

*I'm aware of the £12 minimum fare before 10am, but this would still save money

Yes, that's absolutely fine. Break of journey is permitted on Anytime tickets, which means you're entitled to stop off en-route, start your journey after the origin station on your ticket, or finish it before the destination.

Your ticket might not automatically work intermediate ticket barriers when breaking your journey, but that doesn't mean it's not valid - it's just that the barriers haven't been programmed to accept it, as they have to be manually configured to accept anything other than tickets to/from the station where they're located.

Given the saving I'd definitely be going for this!
