At King's Cross, the gates will be open when there are no members of staff around to call anyone back - and it's a very common occurrence. FCC seems to use its gates more than East Coast, which of course means there's a somewhat easy way to get around to platforms 9-11 without a ticket!

Not that the Kings Cross gates have any relevance to this thread where the gates were operational and the OP passed through them by double gating without a ticket.

Where do you draw the line with regard to passing a ticket purchasing opportunity?

Generally speaking, I draw the line at "barging through a ticket barrier without a ticket". Even if you didn't know about or see the Excess Fares window, you barged through a ticket barrier without authority. "I was aiming to go to the main ticket office" is weapons-grade horse manure, and you know it.

An honest person, faced with a closed ticket barrier and no ticket, would seek assistance from staff. They would direct that person to the Excess Fares window, or allow them through the barriers with directions to visit the ticket office. An honest person would not double-gate.

All you need to claim is that the RPI was "rude", "abusive" and "a jobsworth" and I think we've got the full set on today's edition of Cowpat Bingo.
