Whilst standing, yet again, between Bedford and St.P I was musing on what changes would happen if the TOC carrying the passengers got the full revenue for that passenger...ie not share it with other TOCs on the route.
On the Bedpan route would EMT put on more carriages, drop Bedford, would FCC run fast trains? Would fares go up?

Are you suggesting some sort of electronic tagging/swiping system instead of ORCATS? How would this work?

as seen daily at bedford, alot of people board the emt services because they are first stop st pancreas, and fcc stop along the way, the only other option would be having seperate fares say a 30 pound fcc only return and a 40 pound emt return .

When I first read this post, I thought it was a daft idea. Now, having thought about it, having TOC specific tickets would mean greater competition. However, how would it work in practice?

Surely it'd confuse the average passenger with more ticketing options if they were to buy a TOC specific on the day ticket. Also potential waste of capacity as an empty train goes by that people would have got on but have to wait for the next train of a particular TOC increasing wait times for stations also.

The problem would be when going cross toc, say from East Croydon to Leicester.
The only option would be to buy tickets for each section of the journey. Mind you, it would also rid us of the routeing guide.

not a problem seen it many times before was not a problem on a birmingham- london ticket where you can get a normal ticket/ central-silverlink/ and iirc a chiltern ticket.

i was only saying about the specific journey in the first post.
