Southport is in need of updating. Unclear to me who owns what in that complex at the front of the station but the entrance looks of its time.
Defintitely "the tunnel" is such a dismal approach to the town and makes such a contrast to the generally clean and bright trainshed.

Id suggest Crewe and Chester, both are pretty grim
Chester is fine - both sets of toilets have been refurbished this year. I go through Chester quite a bit and like it as a station.

Any other examples of stations up and down the GB network urgently needing some tender loving care? (Overdue basic maintenance, repaint, etc.)

Pictorial example(s) below are of the station canopy at Ulverston, which, when I was there a little earlier this year, still had something similar to the 'Hanging Gardens of Babylon' growing out of the guttering above platform 1.

I’d suggest most of LU. It’s starting to become apparent that much of the work carried out under the PPP was to a very poor standard, and was largely superficial. There also now seem to be a lot of problems with water ingress.

I find it rather grubby, and should be better being a tourist city

Guildford is in an utterly grim state. The glass canopies above the platforms are so filthy you can't see out of them, the toilets stink to high heaven and almost every surface is caked in pigeon droppings.

Until recently, there was a pigeon's nest on the floor of the footbridge with a sign instructing not to feed the pigeons. The station has an abundance of netting but it doesn't seem to help much.

EDIT: Found some pictures in my camera roll.
Yes indeed. I wonder if the station will receive a heavy overhaul/partial rebuild when the proposed (and approved) Solum regeneration is built). It's funny because, when i first started using it (1980s) before it was rebuilt to its current form, it was tired to the point of decrepitude, but in SR green and yellow paint and looking as if it was still in the 1960s - I used to think it was a wonderful time capsule!

Dumpton Park. That station is the epitome of drab and unloved.
The clue is in the name...

Sadly, as someone involved with Tubelines station works under PPP (following years in LU), I can only agree. The works' scopes were significantly more 'shallow' in general than under LU, with a few exceptions. Tubelines were generally regarded as much better than Metronet from this point of view, but even so it was not satisfactory.

As I understand it, the platforms and footbridge will remain untouched whilst only the facade and concourse are rebuilt as part of the Solum regeneration.

If that is so, then it is quite disappointing really, as although the concourse could do with a refresh (and I'm sure the regeneration will greatly improve it), the platforms are in a far worse state.

The gossip going around is also that the Guildford traincrew depot will eventually be moved into the new station building, which will be a welcome move as the current one (although nice) is a bit of a trek.

Once again, step up Perth.
The canopy over the car park at platforms 5-7 is a sieve and I’m starting to wonder about how safe it is. The two pedestrian bridges over platforms 3/4 are held together with rust and pigeon s***.
They won’t do much to it because there are plans for a major renovation but there have been plans for years - and the way the economy & spending is going I daresay they will continue to be plans for years yet.

Kingston - quite a disgrace for one of SWR's busiest stations. The ticket hall was redone in 2010 (looks pretty but less practical as it replaced three entrances with one) but the platforms and particularly the subway were not touched and are now very much in need of TLC. the awnings on the platforms leak - when it's raining a cascade tips down on anyone unlucky to alight from the first door of the eighth (i.e usually last, and nearest the exit) carriage on platform 2, and you need an umbrella to use the subway to platform 3.
I second this.
One of the last time I was there the ramp up to a platform it was like white water rapids coming down.

Hellifield had a very nice refurbishment a generation back and further work 10 years ago. But it is looking tired again.
I think Hellifield looks great.
It has the trapped in time feel.
The Northern end of the platforms are in a bit of disrepair up by the bay. The south end bay is over grown. What that needs is clearing.

Paignton (together with the rest of the town) is looking tired and dated. For what is now a terminal and a resort it doesn’t give a very good impression of either the railway or the town.
The facilities are housed in the original goods shed, whilst this is fine in itself it has been allowed to become shabby. The empty cafe with little prospect of reopening doesn’t help and the booking office is trapped in the 1970s. The whole interior needs ripping out and modernising. The platforms are bleak and the upside canopy leaks, and being a seaside town is covered in seagull droppings.
I was in Paignton last year it didn't seem all that bad. If you think it is you want to visit Wigan, Bolton, St Helens or other post industrial Lancashire towns. You would then think Paignton is lovely.

Couldn't agree more. Big black hole in the middle of Wigan due to demolition and redevelopment. St. Helens has begun the same process.

That's a shame. The footbridge definitely needs replacing - ideally a second separate bridge for pedestrians with no access to the platforms, to prevent bridge passes being used for fare evasion. The platforms are really poor too: the lack of waiting rooms is really annoying given how poor the current canopies are, with large amounts of the platform uncovered and the existing canopies leaking more than a colander.

I think the entire Thameslink/GN network looks untouched since they took over from FCC with no corporate identity and a haphazard mix of signs .

Total contrast to Southern

I wouldn’t say the TL/GN stations are too bad. GTR branding is somewhat bland for sure, and seems to essentially be FCC but without the pink. But I wouldn’t say any of the GN stations are in a poor state, even if the colours are a bit stale. I’d say Southeastern’s stations are worse, matching the unkempt state of their Networkers.

As much as I'm a genuine fan of Crewe station, it definitely is in urgent need of care and attention...

Rain pouring in around the roof upright columns on platform 1.

No glazing at all on the southern end of the roof metalwork on most platforms. Any train of 2 carriages or more means you get soaked in the rain.

Flooding at the bottom of the stairs (Weston Road) in heavy rain.

Doors badly chipped and showing at least 3 different colored paint layers.

Overgrown abandoned platforms beyond platform 12. Coupled with the abandoned white bulk bags on the trackbed between platform 11 and 12, not exactly a clean welcome to Crewe. Then there's the wasteland known as horse landing accessed by the temporary walkway over the abandoned lines.

Stamford Hill. Rotting windows with a bit of board held there with sticky tape where the frame has gone. And no shelter whatsoever on the southbound side. Used as a store for mops and buckets for some years! OK not the busiest station in London but with 800,000 footfall deserves a shellter and the stairs are seriously rusty.
Upney on the District line would be a strong competitor for the title of station with most peeling paint.

Agree on this one. Used Stamford Hill for the first time the other week (although I've travelled through here weekly for years) and it was the first time I was able to take a proper look at the state of the station - not a good impression. And ok, there are 4tph southbound, but they need to sort that shelter/storage room situation out.

I was surprised by the state of Stamford Hill when I last used it, normally TfL/LO keep their stations in better condition than other operators, and certainly in a better condition than this.

Another vote for Crewe.

As someone who changes there on a semi-regular basis, for a mainline station it's in a terrible state.

Euston bogs need refurbishing again, if they did them properly and looked after them then myself and others would not regularly decry this

Agreed, they also need a decent extraction system fitted to deal with the awful smell.

Just replacing the disgusting hand dryers would improve things as I noticed they seem to produce a nasty odour when in use, like they've not been cleaned since they were fitted, which let's be honest, probably isn't totally unbelievable.

The loose at Paddington, which I believe are underground, are very pleasant in comparison.
