I am actually shocked by the suggestion that these long routes operate without tachos. Wasn't there a case (few years back) where this was clarified (that services couldn't be chopped up in this manner)?
Surely, loads of long routes operate without tachos nowadays - that was the whole point of splitting them up into 2/3/4 sections. I'm sure Transpeak operates straight through from Derby to Manchester without tachos - drivers usually change over at Dove Holes depot, as they would with any route.
Stagecoach 700 (Brighton - Portsmouth) is often used as a good example but that is slightly different again inasmuch that the driver based at, say, Worthing actually only works Worthing - Brighton or Worthing - Chichester (he won't get to Portsmouth which is a further section onwards).
Can't see how the 'Twirly' passes come into it at all.
