Is it feasible to split or join a train at a station where the train is longer than the platform?
For instance, could a 400m HS2 train split at Preston or Carlisle or Carstairs before the platforms there are lengthened to 400m? Presumably the train could come to a halt without making an official station call, and split before the two halves continued their journeys separately. What, if any, changes would be needed to signalling to make such a move feasible?
Ahd what if the rear half made a timetabled station call at the platform, while the front half detached and went on its way with the (front) doors staying locked throughout?
I'm sure that joining trains would be more difficult than splitting because signalling changes must be required in such a case. These can't be too onerous as trains join all the time on the network. But is joining feasible at a platform that is shorter than the combined train will be? Is this done anywhere today?
