It's nothing to do with split tickets; train companies such as Avanti and Northern are very keen to avoid paying Delay Repay and will claim another operator is responsible wherever they think they can get away with it. This applies regardless of whether it's on a through fare or a combination of fares.

There are plenty of examples of the exact same issue occurring on through fares.

It sounds like Northern are liable, however it is difficult for us to help, when it's written in this style, rather than listed in a format that an itinerary would typically appear.

When people are seeking advice regarding itineraries, delay claims, etc, it is a good idea to list the planned itinerary in list format. After the journey, the actual journey times can be listed in the same format, with notes regarding which trains were delayed/cancelled.

Like this, please:

This will help us to help you; thanks :)
At this point I would write to both of them (same letter) telling them to sort out who pays your valid claim between themselves or send you a deadlock letter so that you can take it to the ombudsman.
Thanks both, I'll.reply to the email today as Northerns email and Avantis latest rejection crossed on the same day. They both know the facts of the journey , It's just a silly game of buck passing and avoidance as @yorkie rightly points out!.

It is genuinely arguable either way, however, if you say to Northern that you could have caught their train from Barrow to Millom if they hadn't cancelled it, then they should pay, in my opinion. And the passenger shouldn't be troubled by any dispute between TOCs.

I agree entirely with the suggestion that you write to them both in identical terms, making it clear in each letter that you've also written to the other TOC in identical terms, telling them to sort it out between themselves and to let you know when they've decided who will pay, otherwise it'll go to the Ombudsman. It's absolutely ridiculous. As a taxpayer, it doesn't matter which TOC pays, but the resources expended by both TOCs on arguing about it are unjustifiable.

Just a quick update on this, after conversing by email and a supervisor picking it up, Northern on this occasion will pay the delay repay. The split tickets also appeared to confuse them !

My thanks again for all the replies and advice!!

Oh yes, that confusing concept of split tickets.

Beggars belief that something that is now so common confuses an apparent supervisor.
