Good evening,

A few weeks ago I bought tickets for the following itinerary:

Oxford to Liverpool Lime Street 2nd March:
Oxford 18.12 to Birmingham New Street 19.13
Birmingham New Street 19.34 to Liverpool 21.18

The tickets are split consisting of an off peak day single from Oxford to Banbury; an advance single from Banbury to Birmingham New Street; and a separate advance single from Birmingham New street to Liverpool.

The trainline recently sent me a notification that the Oxford to Birmingham train no longer exists and that I can take a subsequent train instead. There are no subsequent trains that would arrive at Birmingham in time for the connection.

Does anyone know what my options are please? At a push, I could probably make an earlier train from Oxford. Arriving at Liverpool later would be ok but not ideal.

Thanks

You can start your journey as planned if you wish, take the next available Oxford to Birmingham then you'll be OK to take the next available to Liverpool. Bring your itinerary and cancellation notice

Thank you. Am I entitled to take an earlier train if it's convenient to pick up the Birmingham to Liverpool part?

That would be sensible, as you would then not be able to claim delay repay of 60min from XC. I would ask XC nearer the time!

You wouldn’t be able to claim anyway as delay repay is now paid against the published timetable of the day, not your booking itinerary.

You should be OK to take the 17.39 from Oxford. This will give you the time to make the connection in Birmingham.

This has been said many times on here but I have made a number of succesful Delay Repay claims when trains I had been intending to catch 'disappeared' sometime between the previous evening when I checked the times and day of travel. Latest one (involving split tickets as well) has just been paid.

In practice that will be the case, as that service is so busy from Oxford that a ticket check probably can't happen. But the problem is that leaving earlier to arrive on time relies on the interpretation of the contract as including the arrival time at destination. Leaving on time and being carried on the next service by the same operator doesn't rely on anything beyond the plain as day meaning of the terms.

Indeed. Some operators just pay them, presumably because it's less hassle. I'd always submit the claim.
