Typical isn't it. A snake gets loose on a train and everyone is aww look at that... I get my snake out on a train and everyone screams and BTP want to talk to me.

Having said that a low cost budget movie already has the snake on a train title

Agreed, but it's not surprising to see shock and unfamiliarity-based fear in this country with so very few snake species (three).

Of which only one is venomous, and it seems well established that it will leave you alone if you don't tread on it or harass it.

Certainly in 2004 I saw a group of adders ahead of me on a path. I wasn't at all scared, I just watched them for a while, then passed at safe distance.

By all accounts adder numbers have been decreasing since then, so certainly we should be preserving them.

Considering a lot of people are probably unfamiliar with snakes, I don't blame passengers for being nervous since the cost of treating it as non-venomous could be getting a deadly bite whereas caution will let you live to see another day and be proven wrong. Thankfully in this case it wasn't a particularly dangerous species. Also much as I'd love to join in on the snake puns I don't think it would be right to milk them even further.

This is a water snake I photographed about 4 weeks ago. Again, not toxic but I would not let my grandchildren paddle in the stream.

If it had been in the south this may have conjoured up images of long commuter trains snaking round the curves out of waterloo.

In the north there are no trains long enough to worm around corners never mind snake :)

I can understand being more cautious in the US, as you do have snakes that could do a lot of damage. Here in Britain if anyone is seriously worried a snake might be deadly they need to be forced to watch David Attenborough. Even an escaped pet won't be venomous, and the bite of a European Adder (our only native venomous snake) is said to be similar in harm and pain as a bee sting.

Pedantic note: Toxic is not a synonym for venomous in the context of snake bites. Snake venom is a toxin, but the snake itself isn't toxic.

You'll be surprised just how many people keep "hot" reptiles, both legally registered under the DWA act, and sadly illegally. The good news is that almost all of the abandon or escape snakes that find its way into the media are either cornsnakes (who are masters at escaping through the smallest of gaps) or pythons (normally Royals that max out around 1.2m), both of which are constrictors.

Whilst a bite from either is not serious, taking one from an adult Royal hurts, and due to the anti-coagulant nature of their saliva bleeds a lot ! (and yes I'm speaking form experience).

Sadly the numbers of European Adders (Vipera berus) are in decline in the UK. They are UKs only venomous snake, and are quite small, with females being almost twice as large as the male. I wouldn't say that a bite would be no worse than a bee sting... You will be surprised just how many people end up in hospital from bee stings. Fortunately the snakes are very secretive and encounters are not that common. All reptiles native to the UK are protected so it's an offence to even handle some of them. Best advice if you see an adder, watch it from a distance, don't try and do a Steve Irwin and grab it by the tail and use a stick as a makeshift snake hook !

This one scared my wife to death. It had come into the plant from the NS (Norfolk-Southern) Railway tracks. It is a King Snake - it is not venomous and eats other snakes especially the venemous ones and also other vermin. I do my absolute bets not to kill them as they are so useful.

Spoiler alert - the ending was poor (almost as bad as Monty Python & the Holy Grail which ranks as the worst). And the film gave a poor general impression of US train travel.
