Sim cards?

I dont know much about how sim cards work, but say I have a mobile broadband dongle with its own sim card, could I take the sim out and stick it in a 3G smartphone (unlocked of course) or would I need a seperate/different sim for the phone?

I've done this a few times without problem, however it was with the same provider (Vodafone). Not sure if others would let you.

Yes, you can do that. Beware though as some mobile broadband packages will have high costs for calls and texts.

Aye, I've never used it to make calls, but have used it to text a few times using the laptop. Didn't notice any additional charges.

Im not to bothered about making calls or texting as I can use my work mobile for that. However I would like to use it for apps, google sat nav and GPS etc etc

Whilst we're on the subject of mobile broadband dongles and SIMs, I'd like to ask a couple of related questions:

1. Can a GPRS dongle be used to send/receive SMS and MMS messages using a computer?
2. Can a GPRS dongle also be used to make GSM voice calls from a PC - Either directly using the PC's soundcard, or via a "softphone" application or hacked-up Skype installation etc?

I've long been thinking about the potential of GPRS dongles for various applications (Such as sending SMS notifications to my mobile without needing a third-party provider) and I'd be keen to know if eithert/both of the above are possible with 'em.

For 1) yes. I also get incoming calls but of course cannot answer them. All seem to be from the same company asking me to switch to a new phone.

As for 2), no idea.
