Hi there,

For context, I have a background in software engineering but no experience of the rail industry so apologies if I'm unclear or not making sense.

I'm trying to understand whether software engineering roles that impact the running of trains exist in the UK. For an example of the kind of role I envisage existing, see this job posting by Stadler Rail in Switzerland: https://ohws.prospective.ch/public/v1/jobs/aacf5e7b-1834-4f39-9153-73b596c5f3b8

My questions are namely:
* Are there software engineering roles of this nature in the UK?
* If so, how does one find them and get experience in this industry?

Thanks for your time.

Yes they do. But you are more likely to find them at companies working on behalf of the railway like Siemens directly or other contractors like them although Network Rail may occasionally hire for them.

Check the Network Rail careers website for those roles.

Resonate would be another company to try. They are the descendents of the people that developed the Solid State Interlocking in the 1980s but now mainly do operational control systems. However they are only advertising for a project manager at present.

TfL also do some in-house software development work related to signalling. For example, the signalling control system used on the Piccadilly line that is now being rolled out on the Bakerloo line is an in-house product (mTRAC).
