Should vehicles be fitted with speed limiters?

So you always stick to the speed limit regardless of the conditions on the road?

I do, for the same reasons as Mojo. That doesn't mean I agree with these limiters though. When you are on a motorway and overtaking a lorry/slower vehicle, and you go past a junction, and there is a car coming down the slip road, the safest thing to do is accelerate quickly as long as there's nothing in front, so the lorry can pull into Lane 2. I reckon so anyway.

I know you didn't ask me, I do, yes. I'd rather do without the fine, the points on my license and risk of having to retake my test.

Obviously there are some times when it'd be crazy to go up as high as the speed limit so I use my judgment then.

There are times when the speed limit is too high for the conditions, and if you just have people using it so they dont have to watch their speed, you could end up with more accidents because of people letting the limiter define their speed rather than the current conditions.


And what happens if it malfunctions? You could be going along the motorway doing 70, when suddenly it decides you're on a road with a 30 limit, if that were to happen on a busy motorway, you could end up with a major pile up.

Well every website I've looked at, although I don't trust "e-Lawyers" seems to suggest otherwise.

should do what my mum did years ago - buy a crap car like a Fiat Uno - you can't really go much over the limit did manage to do 95mph in it on the A46, but that just about tired the engine out

Anyway, I'll go back to the point I raised. In the video, the driver admits to not taking his foot of the accelerator while the car was slowed by the computer. That will add a second to your reaction time if something unexpected happens in front of you (for example, a child running out into the road). The system is removing an element of safety by reducing the amount that drivers need to concentrate.

What is the point in some ****ty system like this.. Like has been said it could cause accidents when it comes to dodging problems or trying to get out of the way for emergency services.. and also how the hell would it know when road works are on and when there's a temporary speed limit :roll: Its the stupidest idea ive ever heard i may of only been driving 5 or 6 months legally but ive driven on trading estates etc since ive been 7 in a wide variety of vehicles and i know exactly what dangers there are in differant conditions differant scenarios etc this limiter thing is bollucks

silly idea, there are situations when you do need to be able to speed sometimes, not condoning it but we are in the real world unlike the government -obviously its not going to be safe to be bombing along at 70 in a 30 zone.
Heres a better idea for the government, why don't they just ban cars.... oh hang on they probably would if they could.

the government wouldnt ban cars, they would loose money from fuel duty & road tax etc.


whats everybodys opinion on the prposal for all drivers to have continus training every 5 years like what it required for all PCV & HGV Drivers.

i have already started my 35 hours training for my cpc and half the stuff on its is ok but really is common sense. i am lucky that there isnt any test and all u need to pass is to just turn up.

I think once you're 70, as you have to retake your driving test, you should every year. My grandma is about 74 and her driving is terrible

This idea of speed limiters is utterly ridiculous, sounds like another government wheeze to extract more money out drivers.

Personally I would rather concentrate and drive the car myself, not have some "big brother" device telling me how fast I should be going. What if it malfunctions and suddenly slows you down when, for example, you are legally trying to overtake something slow?

FYI, I have been driving over 25 years, have a clean license and always try to stick to the speed limits - though I will admit to being a bit speedier when a lot younger and when there were no speed cameras

maybe they should be fiited with a smimlar type of speed limiter that those fitted to lorries etc and have them set to a mxaimum speed of 80mph, should help to reduce high speed pursuits, although that would meen less of thos problems on the tv which wouldnt be very good.
