Should the government renationalise once things are back to normal?

Although whether all trains would be branded to Rail England is another matter, rather than it simply being the name of an overseeing body.

If all TOC's were completely renationalised and owned/operated by government then I think they should just keep the same brand names as they do now. The only franchises I would definately keep private is Cross country as either an Open Access operator to Arriva or a franchise and I would also suggest handing control of WMT/LNWR to West Midlands Rail Executive who will most likely lease it out to a private operator as a concession

If we had the service provision nationalised, I’d keep the principal of a TOC structure so we do not end up with BR, while also keeping Network Rail. This would comprise of:
  • Intercity
    • All long distance services out of the London terminals
    • TPE services (Liv-Edi; Liv-Gla; Manc Airport-Edi/Gla; Manc Airport-NCL)
    • XC services (Manchester and Edinburgh to Bristol/Plymouth and Reading/Southampton)
    • Scotrail (Gla/Edi-Aberdeen/Inverness)
  • Devolved city operated commuter orgs centred on:
    • Glasgow & Edinburgh
    • Manchester & Liverpool Railway
    • Leeds (could be branded Yorkshire Railway or something like that)
    • Birmingham (West Midlands Rail)
    • Cardiff
    • London commuter services become part of TfL
    • Newcastle mainline commuter services to be incorporated in to the Tyne & Wear metro org structure.
This doesn’t cover all services and there would be overlaps.

I think it would be better to keep the exisitng TOC brands rather than having local services under city operated companies
