Shanghai Metro Collision

Crash occured today between two trains with 260 injured including 20 in critical condition and no reported fatalities so far.

Today’s crash on one of the city’s newest subways, came after Shanghai Shentong Metro Group said the line was having delays due to equipment problems. Shanghai, a city of 23 million, has rapidly expanded its subway system in recent years and some lines have seen problems with faulty signalling, windows shattering, doors not opening properly and poorly trained train operators.

Early statements by the Metro suggesting its another case of malfunctioning signalling switched off to remain open and manual operation then resulting in collision.

Incidentally, did they decide on an actual explanation for the HSL collision a little while back? The official explanation that the first train "lost power" and the second went into the back of it seems to raise more questions that it answers.

Official explanation was its a combination of three circumstances.
1. Domestically developed signalling failed due to lightning (to tackle this a new centre has been set up to develop indiginous signalling thats as reliable as foreign imports)
2. Because of the signalling failure an aspect signal failed on green rather than automatically switching to danger. This is a failure to design fail-safe systems.
3. Switching to manual operation the control centre gave instructions to drivers which resulted in the crash, if the signal had been on danger however it wouldnt have occured.
