As fun as this journey is:

Don’t other later evening departures from other London stations run early when circumstances allow? I’m looking at some of the ex. Kings Cross trains in this instance.

Completely understand why it’s timetabled this way, but I’ve seen far too much of the not so bright lights of MK and Rugby, tonight!

Why doesn't MK or Rugby deserve a late service to Brum?

Normally it will actually take the hour to MKC sat behind an all stations LNR on the slows. It only hasn't today because LNR are running a thinned timetable.

Interestingly one or other of the 2230 or 2330 or both (I forget) used to be timed for 75mph and be hauled by a 57 for crew familiarity reasons.

I thought the 2330 did used to be set down only at most stations, as did the last southbound Avanti (2310 off Brum), but at the start of COVID Avanti removed all such restrictions other than at Watford including the peak ones and they never returned.

Yes, many do, but generally a bit later than the train you mention.

From King's Cross, the 2200 does pick up at the later stops but the 2300 doesn't and this seems reasonable to me.

The 2230 from Euston which you cite fits between these and also there is an argument to say that there probably is a reasonable demand for travel from places like Coventry to Birmingham just after midnight.

I think you can count yourself lucky it's not diverted via Stafford with a bus for Coventry!

Maybe do what Avanti does with the last Manchester train (22:00?) and have it down as set-down only after a certain point along the journey. In that Manchester train every call after Nuneaton is set-down only [although I imagine that is more to do with ease in case the WCML slows are closed north of Nuneaton which means it can't call at Tamworth/Lichfield or has to go on an alternative route after Rugeley.

In case of those late night Birmingham services, set-down only after Milton Keynes.

Would allow station staff at Coventry/Birmingham International/New Street to lock up the entrances to the station so when the train arrives, any passengers can be diverted via a side exit.

Such happy days on the GEML when the final Intercity services of the day operated like this & could run unbelievably early. How we would love fo see this return as traincrew as its talked so fondly about to the newer recruits who have never known it.
