Seat reservation mess up

I am currently on IC637 from Milan to Ventimiglia. I completely forgot I booked a first class single seat. It was so long ago and it must have been on offer.

I’d carefully booked the correct side for the sea views but I must have misread the seat planner.

Ah well, there’s bigger problems in the world and I’ve got three inches of window to peep out of.

Booked seats Amiens-Boulogne when it was loco and coaches. It turned up with our numbers being the compartment with all the seats removed and designated as the bike storage area.
Sat elsewhere and nobody came round to check anyway.

We should really start a seperate sticky thread detailing the best seats to book or not to book on various routes or rolling stock based on posters experiences.

I’ll start it off. Do not book row 16 on Trenitalia first class IC stock if you want a view out of the window. 15 has the window view.

My favourite TGV seats are the ones where the view is partly obstructed by a "Seat with a view" sticker (photo shows said sticker)

We had seats reserved on a train from Brno to Vienna - three digit carriage number. The train that arrived had 2-digit numbers so we picked at random. The train was empty anyway. When the guard came he explained they had a different train that day and (a) changed our reservations to two seats in another carriage but not together but (b) said we can just stay where we were anyway.

AFAIK Trenitalia don't show the direction of travel and they also don't know which way an IC carriage is headed, so it's a gamble anyway.

Yes, I think you're correct. The journey was Paris to Strasbourg so might have been the Frankfurt train!

Have always managed to avoid those "window" seats, but did observe a reservation system mess up last summer: ÖBB website told "your preferred seat is no longer available" after selecting the window seat only-option. Then tried any seat, resulting in a reservation for a window seat (according to the seat map for the specific train type on vagonweb), though the reservation said it was an aisle seat.
