Good evening all, I'm not sure this is meant for here or the other fares category so it's in the wrong place please do let me know

To the point, This did not happen to me but happened to a close friend of mine who is not that interested/knowledgable in fares or trains but i'd just like to share what was told.

He was going from Cambuslang to Baillieston, which requires a change at Rutherglen (I believe it is even valid up to bridgeton or argyle st as the site ticketing sites iteneraries state), However on the day he was travelling, He was due to catch a Larkhall- Dalmuir train as far as Rutherglen, it however departed 10 minutes late and upon arrival into Cambuslang, the train stopped and did not release doors (Passengers onboard, train was not cancelled). It was not also a case of the usual "Carriage out of use" which is all too common on ScotRail nowadays, Instead the entire train doors were not released, as he says other passengers there trying to board other carriages (including rear unit) were unsuccessful, and even attempted to tell the driver, which was unsuccesful and departed. This alone is quite concerning considering the train itself had not been cancelled nor marked as not stopping at Cambuslang. Even on RealTimeTrains it was marked as stopping. So okay things happen but this is what makes it more a fares issue in my opinion. My friend of course not being that well informed asked the Staff at the ticket office, he told them he required a change at Rutherglen. The ticket office staff told him he could travel to Glasgow Central on the service that had came from Lanark shortly behind the larkhall service. So he boarded this and took it to Central as would any reasonable person with this advice. Upon reaching Central, his ticket did not work to open the gates, so asked a member of staff. They told him that his ticket was not valid and he must buy a new one. He tried explaining about the situation and how he was told to come here but was still told to buy a new ticket which he ended up doing. He eventually arrived into Ballieston around an hour late.

After hearing about this I put in a complaint on his behalf over this because I believe it is pretty unacceptable. The fact he has been told to purchase a new ticket despite being told he is allowed to travel on that service, and especially during distruption like this.

I have posted this here because firstly I'd like to know if I am wrong over the new ticket charge and should instead be blaming the ticket office staff for giving incorrect information, or the other way around because I am aware many people are much more well versed in Fare disputes than I am.

Secondly I just wanted to share this appalling service from ScotRail. I have put a complaint to them and await their response, But recently their service quality has became shocking, I understand there are many issues that are outside their control but their constant short forming and lack of rolling stock, rude staff and late running have been ridiculous lately, Not long ago this felt like a totally different story.

Again apologies if this is not the correct category, I can remove and repost it to the suitable category if required. I look forward to hear everyones response and to if I am justified to feel quite annoyed about the extra ticket or if I am blaming the wrong people

As an immediate response, wait to see what ScotRail come back with. It might be that they recognise their failings and will remedy it: or there may be facts you weren't aware of that change things: or they may dig in and resist. Until you know what specific scenario you are dealing with, it's hard to be able to advise on the best way forward.
