Sorry for once again asking questions about various train services, but in my neighbourhood there is nobody who is able to help me.

In about Mai/June 2009 I'm planning to make once more a rail tour to the UK. Just to make an 'ordinary' journey like taking a Pendolino on the WCML is a little bit too 'ordinary' as well and so I'm interested in some special operations.

=> Are there still these obscure Virgin operated services from London to Holyhead v.v. hauled by class 390 EMU's which will be diesel hauled from Chester to Holyhead v.v. or are these services already replaced by DMU's?

=> Arriva Trains Wales are now operating the 'Premier' services from Holyhead to Cardiff v.v.? What's the actual formation of this train set? Which class is situated especially on the southbound service (Holyhead > Cardiff) just behind the locomotive? Are there also seating plans on the www?

=> Transpennine express operates frequent services from Hull to Manchester Piccadilly? Are they hauled by class 185 or class 170 DMU's?

=> What class(es) are in operation actually on Northern services on the Settle-Carlisle-Line from Carlisle to Leeds?

=> What class(es) are in operation on First Scotrail services on the Highland network (Inverness > Wick, Inverness > Kyle of Lochalsh, Glasgow Queen Street > Mallaig)?

=> Are there still loco hauled services around Cardiff?

Questions, questions and once more questions. I hope, it's not to boring for you, but these details will make some major influence for planning my trip.

I'm fairly sure it'd be 170s and/or 158s
Except the Queen Street - Mallaig, which would be a 156

Manchester to Hull is 170 with a couple of exceptions. Leeds to Carlisle should be 158 throughout with some 153's to strengthen services.

Inverness to Wick/Kyle are 158s with declassified 1st class

Glasgow to Mallaig/Oban are 156s with a service between Fort William > Edinburgh/London Cl67 hauled with mk2 mk3 stock (the sleeper). In the Summer months you can get a steam train from Fort William to Mallaig.

Southbound Service formation of the Premier Train. Class 57 - BSO - TSO - TSO - FC Buffet.

So standard is behind the loco on southbound.

is operated by Top and Tail Class 67s.

For Euston to Chester and Holyhead, it's currently 100% Super Voyagers.

Euston to Holyhead direct services are formed of double-sets between London and Chester, where the rear set is removed, and stays in Chester for around 20-30 minutes, before returning back to London as the next Chester to London service, more frequently on its own, but one or two couple up to another Super Voyager from Holyhead/ one from Wrexham in the morning.

I believe that a Pendolino may be dragged between Crewe and Holyhead sometime during the Summer, but only once a week, London-Holyhead-London, simply to ensure that staff retain knowledge of Pendolino's.

On Saturday there is a Euston to Holyhead pendo. 08:50 from Euston and 13:58 from Holyhead.

99% sure Settle and Carlisle is booked 158 throughout, but a 156 may creep in.

Manchester-Hull is hourly, almost all 2-carriage 170s (which may be doubled up).

Scotland: 158s operate Inverness-Kyle, Wick and Aberdeen. 156s West Highland. All without exception (except for one daily Inverness-Edinburgh via Aberdeen which is booked 170+158.). 170s go up to Aberdeen and Inverness from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Thank you very much for your help. I think the West Highland line and the Far North line are a 'must have' on my tour. It's also good to know, that a huge variety of rolling stock is on the track.

I thought that was removed at the last timetable change?
