I believe it is just used as a stabling siding these days, but it may have been used a platform in the past.

My understanding is that, until the recent rebuild, it was occasionally used for a southbound departure, most commonly for an unscheduled changeover of a unit. I believe that the biggest problem was that the signalman had to put a clip on the trap point at the south end of the bay. Whether they can still do this, I know not.

A 1989 photo of the signalling diagram shows the third platform as "Down Siding" with a disc exit signal and no facing point lock. This doesn't seem to have changed since the 1967 rationalisation/electrification.

This doesn't rule out the move described by Gloster above, but it would be an exception.

In the current timetable where the unit working the 2nd train per hour (Ryde Esplanade - Shanklin) where it has a little 3 hour 'rest' between 13:07 & 16:17 sitting in the bay platform during those time. That unit will shift from the bay to the regular southbound platform after the 15:51 Shanklin has departed.
