Rucksacks

Can anyone recommend a decent and more importantly really cheap small rucksack that complies with Ryanairs hand luggage policy? Doesn't have to be top quality, I have decent outdoors equipment already. I saw a 20 litre one for a fiver on the Millets website but it doesn't give dimensions.

Anyway, any advice appreciated.

I reccomend Karrimor from Sportsdirect. Given the huge wheely suitcases I see people take on board, I doubt anything smaller than a hiking backback (typically 65 litres and up) would be too large.

35 litre is usually about the right size for hand luggage, 45 a bit too big if you pack it full. But take a tape measure to check as Ryanair are notoriously picky.

There is plenty of choice out there. Personally i've got a Regatta Daypack, but do need to replace my larger rucksack.

Thanks for the advice folks, very much appreciated. Am flying to Wroclaw a week on Tuesday. The rucksack I was going to use now sadly has chewing gum interlaced with the netting down the side thanks to some kind soul spitting it out and leaving it somewhere inappropriate. Also the zip is a bit dodgy and I believe sincec I last flew with Ryanair they are now known to throw hand luggage in the hold after the first 90 are aboard, the zip on my current one can be temperamental.

I cannot recommend Alpkit.com highly enough for simple, waterproof rucksacks, if that's your sort of thing. Their Gourdon range is effectively a set of tough drybags with some very comfortable straps added. Said bags are also hydration-sack compatible and the 20L version has handy bungee straps and water bottle pockets. If you have any questions, I have found their customer service department is very good.

P.S. I have tried and tested these bags in a lot of tough conditions. Including Corrour in the rain!

Ryanair are more relaxed regards there baggage policies these days. You are allowed two bags on board, (subject to their weight and size restrictions). If your rucksack can fit under the seat in front of you, you can take it on the plane (Tip. Wear it as you board, rather than carry it). My experience of flying to Crete recently is that they will target wheely and cabin bags as part of the 90 bag rule, not rucksacks. Everyone with a rucksack was allowed to take it on board. That flight was during the height of the holiday season. I've flown with Ryanair over 250 times and I have never had a problem with my cabin baggage, although I have seen many pax try to take on board cases that are blatantly too big, or in the one bag days, try to get their tax free items into their overstuffed cabin bag, much to the amusement of fellow pax. Follow the rules (which you agree to at the time of booking), and you will have no problems.

Ortlieb Messenger rucksacks are 30L and fit within the limits with a little height to spare. They are big enough for the weight limit to be relevant. Also, waterproof.
