Would anyone have information on the size of the above ?

It is my suspicion that they must have the largest (by some margin) fleet of van's in the UK.

I wonder how much discount they achieve on purchases / lease agreements.

Peugeot/Fiat/Ford I've seen in the famous red livery and I am sure they feature other makes as well.

We've got Renault vans up here.

Also got one van with "Royal Mail" in a different language.

They also still have plenty of Vauxhall/Opel Combo (Corsa derived) vans, there are several in use at Stockport in Bilingual Welsh livery, and elsewhere possibly
a few LDV Sherpa vans still in service.

So no clue as to who has a van fleet anywhere near the size of Royal Mails which operates from Shetland to the Scilly Isles and everywhere in-between.

I wonder if the livery is applied centrally and the vans despatched or whether it is done locally.

Has anyone ever seen a Royal Mail liveried van that is not red ?

I'm sure I heard on a television programme a while ago that Tesco is up there quite high in terms of the number of freight vehicles on the UK's roads, but it still said they were behind Royal Mail.

Allegedly BT fleet operate the largest mixed fleet in the UK, managing and maintaining over 35,000 commercial vehicles for BT and a further 25,000 vehicles for its customers including The AA, E.ON and Group 4 Securicor.

There's one or two in the Epsom area that are in almost all over dust grey, but that might not count as they could be re-liveried into red in the space of a few minutes with a hosepipe.

I saw a Royal Mail van parked up in the grounds of Buckingham Palace last time I was there. I like to imagine Her Majesty leads a secret double life as a postie.

So if BT was still part of the Post Office as well as Parcelforce the Royal Mail figure would be astronomical.

BT is still 10,000 behind Royal Mail so it is my contention that no one in the UK has a larger operation.

I was going to chuck the army in as a contender for biggest vehicle fleet but they top out at 30,000.

I would say the military have more vehicles of varying types so I don't know if that would count?

When it was the GPO, you used to get red vans for the mail and dark green vans for the telephone side. My grandmother's flat in Eltham was next to the depot for the green vans, so aged 4 and upwards I used to spend time sitting in the window monitoring the buses (and trams up to 1952!) and observing the vans, but I never was a vanspotter, although I did become a bus spotter and (for about six months) a trainspotter too.

Are you sure they deliver mail by van on the Scillies? If they do, it's only on St Mary's.

There are - I know someone who's a RM driver and he clocked a bloke outside their depot marking them off. On his return, he offered to let the bloke jump into his van and drove him round where they were parked up - the chap was delighted!

Some have a variation (usually on the smaller "noddy van" types) in that they have a yellow painted band around the wheel arches but I have no idea why.

I believe the yellow band is applied to vehicles that are used in rural/remote areas to increase the visibility, at least that's what I was told.

I had the same idea just above you. Counted up just shy of 30,000, thats everything from Land Rovers and trucks to AS90s and Challenger 2s.

Couldn't find numbers for various little things like quadbikes and special forces vehicles (obviously!) but I doubt its 15,000.
