Routeing advice required

Hi everyone, and happy Friday!

I've recently discovered the absolute wonder that is the Routeing Guide, and as someone who loves to plan things out in detail it might be my new best friend if I can get my head around it all. There is a journey coming up that I'd like to check with the experts here if I may, to see if my cunning plan will work or if I've got completely the wrong end of the stick.

Stops involved:

• Worthing
• Penge West and/or Crystal Palace
• Clapham Junction

There's an event I'm going to up at Crystal Palace Bowl (on a Sunday) which finishes around 22:30, and the last train back if I were to get a direct to/from (which would have to be Penge West) is 22:44, so I'd have to leave early to get to the station. However... despite no trains heading south past that time in that area, there is a slightly more comfortable 22:56 from Crystal Palace itself going northwest to Clapham Junction, and from there I can get back to Worthing on the main line down.

What I'm hoping will work is getting a WRH-CLJ super off-peak day return and using routeing allowances to go up to either Penge West or Crystal Palace, break my journey there for the event, and continue it on up to Clapham afterwards, saving me massive amounts in multiple tickets.

From what I can tell, as long as my journey goes up from Hove rather than Brighton this does follow the LB map as a valid journey without any doubling back. Am I correct, or should I be sent to the gallows for asking such a daft question?

Bonus question:

• This might be a case of cheek and chance, but if the outbound train stops at Penge West and I walk to Crystal Palace rather than rail all the way up to London Bridge and back, is that still a valid continuation?

Apologies for the waffling post, obviously hoping I've got this right (for this journey and the possibilities it opens up for other travel) but will still be incredibly grateful if I'm shown why I'm wrong before buying the ticket!

Without researching the guide, PNW looks off-route to me (unless you change at Sydenham, which may exceed the 3-mile limit.)

As someone with the routeing guide as their best friend, this all looks valid to me, but I personally would use the forum ticketting site get an itinerary that stops at all the stations that you want before using this ticket given that the new NRCoT based validity on itineraries rather than the Routeing Guide.

Only Penge West at 22.44 seems to work for me.

I concur that your proposed route is entirely valid. The following route is traceable on map LB without doubling back and whilst sticking to the links shown on the map:
Worthing-East Croydon-Penge East-Sydenham-Crystal Palace-West Norwood-Balham-Clapham Junction

(Map LB is the only map applicable to Brighton to Clapham Junction, which are the Routeing Points you are travelling between)

You would be breaking your journey at Penge East and resuming it at Crystal Palace, having skipped the detour to Crystal Palace. That is fine because all of the walk-up tickets between Worthing and Clapham Junction permit a break of journey.

Thank you all for your speedy and helpful replies! Especially useful having that ticket site on this forum which I wasn't aware of before, it's got MUCH better journey breakdowns than the regular network sites.

Really appreciate that extra bit of info about breaking at one point and resuming at another too, makes logical sense that it would be the case but fantastic to have it confirmed.

Would a Southern Day save suit? No routing issues then. Its valid until 04 the next day I think but check. Probably a couple of quid cheaper???
