Road accidents: would you HONESTLY stop?

I have stopped to help at accidents, and will do so again. The one I found most scary was a motorcyclist who had been hit by a car on the dual carriage way. He was laying on the road in lane 1, traffic was continuing in lane 2 at normal speed. Apart from me, the only other person who came to help was an old granny who was walking past with her shopping. In fairness, maybe the other drivers could not see what had happened and thought it was just a breakdown. I have never been so glad to see another human being as when the police turned up.

One day it might be me in the bottom of the ditch at the side of the road, and I hope to god that if it is, someone stops to help...

My parents had a motorbike rider come off in front of them on the m1 last month. Between them and a couple of others they got the traffic stopped.

Well, mostly. Some BMW drivers decided to use the hard shoulder instead, shouting the c bomb at them as they tore past.

That might also be why people don't stop anymore.

All I would like to add, is that it is reassuring to know that there are still decent souls like your goodselves out there willing to go out of your way to help someone in their moment of need. Good on you all!

Well both times I have come off my motorbike people have stopped to make sure I was ok , Both times I was unhurt although grateful of the help in picking my machine up off the floor . One of the occasion it was actually a man on the way to his wedding in a nice Bentley wedding car who helped me pick my bike up . Id always do the same for someone else if I saw then in that kind of trouble and could assist .

I would stop.

When I had an accident about 7 years ago, not one car stopped - I had a tyre blow out and spun into a hedge.

One European country I've driven in recently has a law you must stop if you witness an accident, and can be fined if you don't!

It winds me up literally no end when stuck in traffic on the M62 (regular occurrence sadly!) and near a junction (maybe half a mile off) and people come tearing down the hard shoulder (all types of vehicles). One that really hacked me off a few months ago was a taxi that did it, saw the cause of the delay and stopped in the middle of the exit slip to rejoin (rather than continue to come off then rejoin, which would have been quicker anyway!) and in doing so nearly caused an accident

Idiots drive all kinds of cars, not just 'big executive' ones!

It's going back some years but I once stopped at the scene of a rear-end collision when I saw it was my boss involved (not at fault). Wide road, daylight, 40mph limit. 15 minutes or so later, with the police at the scene, a kid who had only passed his test a week earlier crashed into my parked car and landed on his roof in the middle of the road.

Would I do it again? Yes.
