It's been announced today that actor/comedian Mel Smith passed away yesterday following a heart attack. From the BBC News site

Comic actor and writer Mel Smith has died of a heart attack, aged 60, his agent has confirmed.

The British comedian - known for the sketch shows Alas Smith and Jones and Not The Nine O'Clock News - died at his home on Friday, Michael Foster said.

Smith formed a lasting partnership with co-performer Griff Rhys Jones with whom he set up the independent television company, Talkback Productions.

Rhys Jones described his friend of 35 years as a "brilliant actor".

In a statement on behalf of his wife, Pam, Mr Foster said: "Mel Smith, comedian and writer, died on Friday aged 60, from a heart attack at his home in north west London."

An ambulance was called to Smith's home just after 09:00 BST where he was found dead.

A very funny man, I used to love the '(Alas) Smith & Jones' comedy shows and remember the alternative 'Mel & Kim' duo which performed a charity Christmas single. RIP.

Geordie back from exile.
I have so many fond memories of Mel Smith and Co making me laugh so much my sides hurt. Not The Nine o'Clock News was the funniest and cleverest show of its generation and to be honest still funnier than a lot of modern comedy. Alas Smith and Jones was a good follow up act and his portrayal of 'Bernard' in Morons from Outer Space still make me grin to this day.

Time to look out some of the old stuff......

Very sad to hear this news. Was having a chuckle to "Nice Video, Shame About The Song" only last week.

I think he was great in "Muck and Brass" a straight acting role for once in his career.
