Do any of these little beauties ever come out on railtours? I know WCRC have a couple of them, but do they ever get used? Frankly Spitfire Railtours might as well rename themselves 'Syphon Railtours' these days.

In my bashing heydey in the mid-late '80s, I spent more time chasing these beasts than any other class, regularly heading south for weekends based on Salisbury, where they reigned supreme on passenger workings, only interrupted by the frankly as good 50s and DEMUs.

Unlike Zontar, I'm not ashamed of my interest in class 33s, so come on everyone, give me some good gen!

Only one of WCRC's 33s (33207) is currently operational, understandably they don't seem prepared to guarantee its availability for tours. It has done one tour this year, the Joint Line trip from Worksop to Marylebone and Quainton Road.

I take it you are prepared to cover any losses Syphon Railtours as you called them make.33025 went from Waterloo to Weymouth last year and made a big loss. Were you on that?

I would guess not.
But problem with that tour was that WCRC messed around considering it promised a class 33 then dropped out leaving joint line to sort the mess out if a tour company request traction and the provider says yes then that should be that.

I can only guess the loss was made due to the cranks being offput by the unreliable available of the traction.

No, obviously I won't be considering covering anyone's losses. I like Syphons and go on Spitfire tours when I can. I didn't go on the 33 one last year - can't do every tour and I don't live in the London area. I started this thread purely as a request for gen and wasn't expecting a lecture on the economics of railtour operations!

I would love to see more 33 tours but very difficult with one servicesable will just have to wait and see what happens when others come back to the mainline.
