So i've started booking up an adventure for the summer and figured that the collective wisdom of the forum would have some advice on interesting workings I may encounter en route or some lines I should try and squeeze in as i'm fairly loose on plans at the minute (with a couple of exceptions- eg. I have to catch the morning Budapest-Deli to Zagreb Kolovdor service to make sure I make my hotel check-in time, and in general, the end destinations each day are mandatory as i'll have a hotel booked there already).

So my plan so far is as follows-

27/06- Fly from Stansted to Oslo- arrive mid-afternoon and stay overnight.
28/06- (Interrail starts)- 05:56 Oslo S-Stockholm. Travel First Class Sleeper overnight to Malmo
29/06- Spend morning/afternoon in Copenhagen, onwards to Hamburg via Rodby and the Train Ferry
30/06- Hamburg-Prague. Likely looking at breaking journey in Dresden and Halle to snag the hauled S-Bahn services.
01/07- Based in Prague all day- might go for a snoop around the depot in Usti nad Labem.
02/07- No real aim but starting in Prague, I need to end the day in Vienna.
03/07- Vienna-Bratislava-Budapest
04/07- Based in Budapest all day
05/07- Budapest-Zagreb. Likely will have a potter about on the local Commuter Rail which seems to be included in the pass.
06/07- Zagreb-Ljublijana-Maribor

This is where my concrete plan and booked hotels come to a halt. Yes, I do seem to pelt my way through Norway, Sweden and Denmark and that's because they're expensive so i'm fine with a short whistlestop tour before slowing down a little as the climate gets warmer. I'm 19 and reasonably fit so I have a tolerance built up from All Line Rovers for exceptionally long days

My rough plan after Maribor involves pottering through Austria for a couple of days before travelling through Switzerland, into Milan via Lugano/Chiasso, perhaps paying a visit to Turin before ending up in Ventimiglia and ambling my way down the French Riviera before spending a couple of days in Spain, ending my journey on July 20th in Madrid ready to fly back on July 21st.

I'll probably update this thread as I go along as well and have a full route constructed, and it'll eventually become a trip report when that time comes around. But for now it's more of an advice and gen thread I think!

As you're starting off in Oslo I can recommend the Anker Hostel ( the W is silent..) as it's cheap, clean and a short 10 min walk from the station. I stayed there last night on my way back from Lapland and paid about £21 through Booking.com - which is pretty cheap for Oslo!

Already found myself a place (nowhere near as cheap as that but it's a full hotel) in Oslo, but thank you! I know how expensive it can get (Mine was £89 which seemed exceedingly cheap for the dates I wanted compared to everywhere else bar hostels)

Okay- i'm now looking for some suggestions!

I'm based in Budapest for about 36 hours- any decent routes to go down with some loco hauled action within a 90 minute radius or so? I'm aware that the locos themselves are fairly plentiful, it's just where to go

So jealous of the Interailling!

Is it true that we soon won’t be able to buy Interrails?!

Another question....

Is Interrail accepted on RENFE Cercanias networks? I'm assuming yes as it's plastered with RENFE logos...

And we're away!

First snag being that the train didn't actually go on the ferry between Copenhagen and Hamburg. We were dumped at either end and had to walk on ourselves. Still, a nice little crossing.

Pair of ICE-Ts from Hamburg to Lutherstadt Wittenberg this morning, for a hopefully loco hauled potter towards Prague.

The DSB First Class product on their Intercity services also isn't half bad. Complementary drinks, snacks and bizarrely, some artisan looking Marzipan chocolate!
